4-H Project Selection
Thinking about your selection of next year's 4-H project can begin now. Taking time now to reflect on what you would like to learn from the experience can help you set a goal, such as "learning to write more creatively or raising a small market animal."
You can then think about the steps (also called "objectives") that you will take (or meet) to reach that goal. Remember that signing up for the project is just one step in the process of learning to write more creatively or learn to be an entrepreneur. A project is the culmination of many steps.
If becoming a writer interests you perhaps you want to set aside time to begin practicing your writing. Perhaps you want to carry a notebook into which you can jot ideas, short phrases or certain words that carry special meaning for you. Perhaps you have a teacher or mentor who can talk with you about your ideas. These could all be steps in completing next year's project.
This applies no matter what your interest. You can break down a photography, or sewing or food project the same way. Any one of these projects can help you develop skills that can be taken into your adult life and the workforce. Take this time to consider what you can learn with your 4-H project that will help you advance in your interest and skills. Really, your project goal is just one more step in your life's goals.
